In ordinary times, this letter would recount the joys of the concert we’d just completed, describe our upcoming June concert, and ask you to financially support BCG. What I can tell you instead is that Sanford and the Board are making plans for next season, with contingency plans depending on when we can safely resume rehearsals/concerts. You will hear about these plans in the coming weeks, and I think you will be very pleased. However, these are no ordinary times. This letter explains the how early termination of this season affects BCG’s finances and how you can help.
Production costs for Elijah were met by accumulated resources and generous individual donations. The concert left us with amazing memories, but not a large cash reserve. Our ongoing expenses through the Summer are largely for Sanford’s services (his work for BCG is a 12-month effort), and the services of a bookkeeper and graphic artist. In normal times our Spring income would come from chorister dues, concert ticket sales, and donations from our Spring fund-raising. Early termination of our season eliminated the first two sources, and we must rely on our Spring fund-raising appeal and any other creative strategies we can devise to keep BCG funded until we are able to present concerts again.
While we are not rehearsing/performing, Sanford has many responsibilities for BCG, including planning future concerts and participating in fundraising and board deliberations. He also is doing everything possible to maintain chorister morale and cohesion during this difficult time (e.g., the Zoom “alt-rehearsal” on Monday evenings at 7:30pm) and expects to continue composing works for us. Sanford’s 20 seasons with BCG were capped by our amazing Elijah concerts, and his artistic direction is crucial to our future success. In normal times, the board would be contemplating a June bonus for Sanford and choristers would be contributing to a gift. Recognizing that he deserved assurance that his compensation would continue in the immediate future, several choristers stepped forward with significant contributions to take us through June. We will require additional funds in order to meet our obligations through the fall and will be appealing to all of our supporters for their help.
Assuming we are able to start our 2020-2021 season in September, we will need to raise approximately $25,000 for Sanford’s services and other essential costs through November. A donation of at least $250 from every chorister would cover about half of our July-November expenses. We recognize that such an amount may be difficult or even impossible for some choristers at this time, but please consider contributing at least what you would have paid for spring dues ($125). If enough of you who can comfortably do so contribute significantly more, then we can meet this goal together. You can donate on-line, or mail your check to: Bay Choral Guild, P.O. Box 597, Los Altos, CA 94023.
Thank you for whatever you are able to do.
Stay well!
Sincerely,
Sandra Wilson, President
