Ordering a JackTrip Virtual Studio Device
The JackTrip Virtual Studio Device (VSD) is a (more or less) plug-and-play device for musical collaboration at a distance. This is a possibly superior alternative to installing JackTrip software on your own computer. It's a tiny computer (a Raspberry Pi 4) with the JackTrip software already loaded onto it. They tout the extra-low latency of its sound card compared to the average computer, and of course you don't have to fuss with installing software and worrying about OS compatibility or whatever. And if you use the VSD, you'll leave your computer free to run Zoom at the same time. There are many choirs and other musical ensembles using solely this box as their way to connect.
You can buy them on Amazon for $150, but note that that's just the box—you'll need additional accessories:

You can buy them on Amazon for $150, but note that that's just the box—you'll need additional accessories:
- USB-C power supply. Similar to a phone charger, but delivers more juice than the average charger. There is a specific recommended power supply on the Raspberry Pi site. At the bottom of that page are approved sellers, most of whom sell it for $8, probably plus shipping but I couldn't quickly tell how much. Amazon also sells the CanaKit-branded version for $10 with potentially free shipping, which you'll likely find on the VSD page in the "Frequently bought together" section.
- Headphone connector. The audio output of the VSD is dual RCA jacks, but most headphones have a 3.5mm plug ("miniplug"). Again, Amazon offers a candidate in the "Frequently bought together" section. This one is $11, but there are cheaper versions in the "similar items" section.
- Microphone, headphones, direct Ethernet cable to your router. These we discussed already on the JackTrip software setup page. The microphone is the one you might need to think about, since obviously you can't plug your laptop's built-in microphone into the VSD.
