Rehearsal Markings for Winter 2020
Some conventions:
- Since there are no measure numbers in our score, for the first several weeks of notes the measures are notated as page.staff.measure, e.g., 27.2.3 is the third measure of the second staff on page 27. References to entire pages use the standard “p” abbreviation. However, we have decided to number our measures after all. We’ve taken time in rehearsal to do this, but if you were absent, you now have homework to do. The rule is that measure number 1 is the first full measure of a movement (i.e., if the first measure has fewer beats than the time signature says, it’s measure 0). To check that you counted correctly, you can consult the table below, which gives the number of the first measure of selected staffs. The first number indicates the second staff of the movement, the last number indicates the very last staff of the movement (or in some cases of the chorus), and the numbers in between are the top staffs of each page after the first. Of course, you really only need to check the last number. Or you can copy all the numbers into your score and then fill in the rest of the staffs on your own. Be aware that there are a small number of places where the second staff or the final staff is also at the top of a page. I didn’t repeat the numbers in these cases.

#43: 4, 15, 35, 52, 70, 87, 104, 118 - All pronunciations are given in IPA. This is fairly precise, but you have to avoid any temptation to read the vowels as English, especially a, e, and i. Think Latin and you’ll be close. There are many IPA resources on the web. The one at ipachart.com lets you click on a symbol and hear it pronounced (there are way more symbols than I’ll use here; you can safely ignore everything below the “Fricative” line).
Notes from February 24 rehearsal
#2
m 16 (SA) or 18 (TB): dim on “Lord” so you can cresc out of it
#15
Sanford is calling for “special effects”. True pp to start.
#32
Sanford reversed course and is back to wanting “shall” pronounced approximately ʃɛl.
#41
The sit cue at the end has changed. Sanford now wants us to sit on the downbeat of the last measure of this movement (m 61), rather than on on m 1 of the next movement.

- m 22, B: no breath
- m 36–76: tenuto on the low note “though” that starts the fugue subject (i.e., make sure it’s heard)
- m 96, STB: take the dot off (this marking is in the Dec 9 notes, too, but it’s not clear everyone got it)
- m 98–103: bring out “Be not afraid” every time you have it, less on everything else.
- m 32: mood is conspiratorial, a little breathy
- m 38, S: take 8th rest out
- m 19, B: dim second half of measure
- m 23, TB: dim
- m 27, A: ff
- m 57: take 8th rest out of “not”

- m 2: take 8th rest out of last note
- m 4: take 8th rest out of last note
- m 29: this f is subito
- m 32: cresc, so that the next measure f is not subito
- m 39: take dot off “earth” (T can lift before “His” an unspecified amount)
Notes from January 20 rehearsal
We’ve decided to number our measures, so that we can work well with orchestra. Until everyone’s caught up, though, tonight’s notes will remain in the page.staff.measure notation.

- 12.1.2, 12.2.2: solid “nə” release at end of “Zion”
