​Join us in a tour through our country’s musical history. We begin with traditional Northern Harmony and Southern Harmony songs, and then travel from the Underground Railway and the Civil War to the Western Frontier. Next, we explore the 20th-century emergence of American “art” music, featuring both texts by American authors set with music by diverse composers and classics by Samuel Barber and Randall Thompson. And finally, what survey of American music would be complete without a visit to Broadway theaters and jazz clubs?

There will be a preview lecture one half hour before each performance.
